About Cristo Rey Jesuit High School 

Cristo Rey Jesuit (CRJ) in Milwaukee is part of national network of 37 Catholic high schools transforming urban education through a unique integration of rigorous academics, professional experience, and spiritual formation with a focus on students of limited financial means. In the fall of 2020, CRJ will move into its new $35 million campus across the Menomonee Valley from Marquette University, in the heart of Milwaukee’s dynamic Clarke Square neighborhood. For the 2020-21 school year, Cristo Rey Jesuit will serve a diverse student body of approximately 400 young men and women and 200 alumni. Cristo Rey students attend class four days per week and work in a professional setting five days per month through our Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP). While some of our students will enter high school below grade-level academically, it is the collective mission of our staff to ensure that our students gain admission to—and ultimately graduate from—college. In pursuit of that goal, Cristo Rey teachers work hard, innovate, plan, reflect, and practice so that they maximize their impact in the classroom. 

Job Description 

As part of Cristo Rey’s motivated and collaborative teaching staff, you will educate students in mind and spirit. Through engaging, data-informed instruction that effectively incorporates technology, you will ensure students are prepared for college and equipped with the habits of mind that undergird success. Your relentlessness, zest, and commitment to excellence will help form a student body distinguished by breakthrough achievement gains, a passion for justice, and readiness for the professional world. Instructional Practice 

  • Guided by the Cristo Rey Network’s college-prep curriculum, develop standards-based, data-driven annual, unit, and lesson plans that ensure exceptional student achievement gains on Cristo Rey and AP end-of- course assessments as well as on the ACT and SAT battery of college access tests. 
  • Design and administer formative and summative assessments aligned to course standards, complete in- depth analysis of student performance on assessments, and ensure efficacious instructional responses. 
  • Execute rigorous, objective-driven, equitable, culturally relevant lessons that accelerate student growth through feedback, focused literacy practices, and high-impact technology. 
  • Prioritize and manage your time effectively to follow through on the various responsibilities of being an excellent teacher, including planning, teaching, communicating feedback, grading, collaborating, differentiating learning experiences, and offering enrichment opportunities. 
  • Provide one-on-one and small-group tutoring to students in class and after school. 
  • Build an understanding of each student in the spirit of cura personalis (care for the whole person); 
  • Forge strong relationships with students and parents, and communicate frequently with families to increase the investment and partnership that will enable students to flourish. 
  • Maintain an organized, equitable, and vibrant classroom environment that supports student learning and conveys warmth, order, and a sense of belonging. 
  • Consistently uphold school-wide discipline practices and routines as well as norms for student behavior. 

Professional Presence 

  • Approach teaching through a developmental lens, and enthusiastically participate in professional development; seek and apply feedback; independently access resources to further your own growth. 
  • Contribute fully to the team in a range of ways: analyze student work and performance data with colleagues, make your teaching public to colleagues, identify students in need of support, problem-solve challenges. 
  • Collaborate with peers with integrity, humility, commitment, humor, and joy to ensure the foundation of trust that will enable the team to accomplish its ambitious goals.

Student Support and Contribution to School 

  • Actively contribute to a grade-level team, including meeting weekly and providing ad hoc student advising. 
  • Co-lead a student formation advisory to help students develop the CRJ Graduate at Graduation values. 
  • Provide targeted student support in a daily learning lab (“study hall”). 
  • Assist with moderating a student club. 
  • Actively monitor class transitions to ensure a calm and orderly environment. 
  • Substitute teach as requested by school leadership. 
  • Attend and chaperone school events, including retreats, athletic events, liturgies, service trips and dances. 


Successful applicants will embody the mission-alignment, intellectual curiosity, openness to growth, commitment to equity, optimism, and zest that are central to the character of our staff. In addition, they will meet or exceed the following requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s degree with a major, minor, or comparable credential of content expertise in the primary teaching discipline (master’s degree in primary teaching discipline preferred). 
  • Teaching license in the primary teaching discipline or demonstrable progress towards obtaining licensure. 
  • Record of strong student achievement as a middle school or high school teacher. 
  • Proficiency using technology to advance teaching and learning. 
  • Experience working with English learners and/or Spanish language proficiency a plus.
