Position Available: For 2018-19, Cristo Rey Jesuit seeks a full-time Counselor/Social Worker.

About Cristo Rey.

Cristo Rey Jesuit in Milwaukee is the 29th school in a growing national network of Catholic high schools recognized for transforming urban education through a unique integration of rigorous academics, professional experience, and spiritual formation.  For the 2018-19 school year, Cristo Rey Milwaukee will welcome its third class of approximately 125 freshmen boys and girls of limited financial means.  Cristo Rey’s innovative model calls for our students to attend class four days per week and work in a professional setting five days per month through our Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP).  While some of our students will enter high school below grade-level academically, it is the collective mission of our staff to ensure that our students gain admission to—and ultimately graduate from—college.  In pursuit of that goal, Cristo Rey has a longer school day and an extended academic year, and our teachers innovate, plan, reflect, and practice so that they maximize their impact in the classroom.

Job Description.

As part of Cristo Rey Jesuit’s motivated and collaborative founding team, you will educate and support students in mind and spirit.  You will blend ambitious vision with clear systems thinking to help refine and implement a robust, 9 – 12 counseling program and college-readiness curriculum that inspires students to pursue college and ensures they are deeply knowledgeable about their college options and the college process.  In the spirit of cura personalis, or care for the whole person, you will help ensure students’ social-emotional health. You will combine empathy, cultural dexterity, and expertise working with low-income communities to build strong, trusting partnerships with students and their parents so that CRJHS can partner effectively with them on the journey to and through college.  Your influence with adults will allow school staff and leadership to nurture and sustain a college-going culture.  Your interpersonal intelligence, courage, and drive to find solutions will make you an asset to an adult team that is high-functioning, vibrant, and grounded in a deep commitment to the school’s bold mission.  By giving generously of yourself, your gifts, and your time, you will build the foundation of a school that serves its students’ diverse needs, cultivates their many talents, and ensures 100% of its graduates gain acceptance to college.


Direct Student Support.

  • Assist in the development of a robust scope and sequence of skills and knowledge to define Cristo Rey’s four-year college-counseling program, and help design and teach College Readiness
  • Provide one-on-one and small-group social-emotional counseling support to students.
  • Build supportive relationships with students to understand each student’s unique needs and areas of strength as a “pre-applicant” to college.
  • Assist in identifying, supporting and monitoring progress of students with an IEP or 504 Plan.
  • Help design, coordinate, and execute college-focused field lessons and in-school experiences for students.
  • Match students with best-fit pre-college summer programs, and guide them through the application process.
  • Connect students to volunteers, community organizations, and experiences that develop them as whole persons, and help students and families take advantage of these resources.
  • Maintain confidential counseling records, and sustain frequent communication with parents and guardians.
  • Maintain consistent, productive communication with parents regarding the college preparation process.

School-wide Systems Development.

  • Maintain and refine systems for tracking students in need of and receiving counseling to maximize the support provided and to ensure compliance with the law and clear communication with stakeholders.
  • Cultivate a physical school environment that promotes care for self, care for the community, and the goal of college graduation.
  • Assist in leading professional development for teachers and school staff regarding their role in providing robust, adaptive support and guidance to students in a college-going culture.
  • Plan and execute grade-level-appropriate parent meetings to build college knowledge and investment.
  • Collaborate with the campus minister, school counselor, and dean of school culture to ensure a robust set of summer programming offerings to a diverse range of students.
  • Foster relationships with local colleges and universities to identify and establish school-counseling intern opportunities as a strategy for increasing student support.

Student Support and Contribution to School.

  • Actively monitor transitions, meals, and/or other common times to ensure a calm and orderly environment; chaperone and moderate school events, including retreats, field lessons, college visits, and dances.
  • Run a student club and advisory; assist advisees through their journey at Cristo Rey, and serve as a point of contact for advisees’ parents.
  • Seek opportunities to participate on committees, plan and attend school-wide events, and otherwise contribute to the life of the school.


Successful applicants will embody the mission-commitment, intellectual curiosity, openness to growth, optimism, and zest that are characteristic of our staff.  In addition, they will meet or exceed the following requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher;
  • School Counseling or similar licensure, or demonstrable progress towards obtaining licensure;
  • Record of effective student support with high-school students in low-income, urban communities;
  • Superior initiative, resourcefulness, and organizational capability;
  • Proficiency using technology to track and provide support to students;
  • Proficiency in Spanish.
